Dissection was formed in 1989 by guitarist/vocalist Jon Nödtveidt and bass player Peter Palmdahl. Earlier they played in a thrash metal band called Siren's Yell, a band existing between 1987 and 1989. In July 1997 Jon Jon Nödtveidt and a guy named Vlad killed a 37-year old homosexual Algerian named Josef Ben Maddour and on the 7th of July Jon was sentenced to 8 years in prison and was released in the autumn of 2004. He shot himself somewhere between August 14th and 16th. Swedish police found him in his apartment the 16th of August 2006. He killed himself because he felt he had achieved all that he could and was meant to in this life. According to some who actually knew him this was probably planned ever since he got out of jail.
